In 1906, he graduated and received a scholarship to the University of Chicago.Hubble studied at Wheaton High School and, even though he did sports more than studying, his grades ranged from 95-100.Instead of having his 8th birthday party, he asked to stay up all night studying the heavens through his grandfather’s telescope. Edwin’s fascination with astronomy began at the age of 7 when his grandfather showed him one of his telescopes. His father had a degree in law and was an insurance salesman. He was the third of eight children to John Hubble and Virginia Lee James. Edwin Powell Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri, on November 20, 1889.See the fact file below for more information on the Edwin Hubble or alternatively, you can download our 26-page Edwin Hubble worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. He is one of the most famous astronomers of all time. Download the Edwin Hubble Facts & WorksheetsĮdwin Hubble was an American astronomer most noted for his crucial role in the establishment of observational cosmology and extragalactic astronomy. One could still imagine that God created the universe at the instant of the big bang, or even afterwards in just such a way as to make it look as though there had been a big bang, but it would be meaningless to suppose that it was created before the big bang. ![]() On the other hand, if the universe is expanding, there may be physical reasons why there had to be a beginning. ![]() One can imagine that God created the universe at literally any time in the past. In an unchanging universe a beginning in time is something that has to be imposed by some being outside the universe there is no physical necessity for a beginning. It should be emphasized that this beginning in time is very different from those that had been considered previously. One may say that time had a beginning at the big bang, in the sense that earlier times simply would not be defined. Their existence can be ignored because it would have no observational consequences. If there were events earlier than this time, then they could not affect what happens at the present time. Under such conditions all the laws of science, and therefore all ability to predict the future, would break down. Hubble's observations suggested that there was a time, called the big bang, when the universe was infinitesimally small and infinitely dense. These features insure a body of positive knowledge that can be transmitted from person to person, and that accumulates from generation to generation. The essential requirements are agreement on the subject matter and the verification of predictions. However, they frequently lead to predictions that can be tested by experiments and observations in new fields, and, if the interpretations are verified, the theories are accepted as working hypotheses until they prove untenable. The theories at first are ex post facto-merely plausible interpretations of existing bodies of data. The laws are grouped and explained by theories of ever increasing generality. Agreement is secured by observation and experiment-impartial courts of appeal to which all men must submit if they wish to survive. These judgments do not concern individual facts and events, but the invariable association of facts and events known as the laws of science. Science deals with judgments on which it is possible to obtain universal agreement.
